Stuff I Know 6: My Degree Won’t Impress Editors

stuff I know v2You shouldn’t major in creative writing. Maybe minor in it while you major in something useful like computer science, engineering, pre-med, teaching, law, whatever. Or skip our bloated for-profit college system and get into a trade. If you’re going to go to college at all, set yourself to get paid when you’re done. You probably won’t be any good at writing until you’re old, so set yourself up to be able to pay the bills in the meantime, huh?

Unlike other degrees you can go into debt for, majoring in creative writing won’t do anything to further your success in the related career field. You’ll get into some good writing groups on campus, but you can do that on your own. Anything you need to know about writing you can learn through independent study, joining local and online groups, and reading and writing and reading and writing and on and on. That costs $0. All hail the internet, right?

  1. Disclosure: Yep, I majored in creative writing. And thus, I am an optician. There’s a reason people make jokes about English majors. Less useful than History majors, and slightly more useful than Philosophy majors. But all three groups can hang out and argue together while everyone else gets paid.
